Intended to be a part of the 2010 Summer Travels series, the Massachusetts Turnpike carries Interstate 90 through its last leg of the transcontinental journey. During the journey through Western Massachusetts, the Mass Pike carries long distance traffic, whereas local traffic uses US Route 20 for the towns in between. As a result, the Mass Pike has a 30 mile gap between Exits 3 (Westfield) and 2 (Lee), a common theme in the west, but a rarity in the east. This video travels the westbound Mass Pike between Exit 3 and Exit 1, ending about a mile east of the toll booths. Music is “Foreplay-Long Time” by Boston. All rights reserved. HURRICANE IRENE in the BERKSHIRES

This was a bad Hurricane for Berkshire County. I think the storm was easy on us compared to upstate NY and Vermont.we had very little damage just a lot of rain. I have a small stream 3 foot wide behind my house and it went over the banks 20 feet wide in some places. never seen so much water before.

The phone’s mic isn’t really picking up the rumble that we are hearing… we thought jets were evacuating somewhere, as it was a deep loud rumbling noise!

In Nothern Berkshire County we got very little wind, No wind damage here. Iwas very calm and I expected we were in the eye and itwould start blowing anditnever did. We almost always miss the big storms, they go by either north or south of us. I think it hassomething to do with Mount Greylock and surounding mointains protect us and move north and south a bit.

Berkshires, MA Real Estate: First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit Extended

Berkshires, MA Real Estate: First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit Extended

Richmond, MA (PRWEB) January 11, 2010

Economic and housing forecasts remain cautiously optimistic now in the first weeks of 2010, with current conditions making the first months of the new year an opportune time for home buyers to make their move. This holds especially true for historically strong regional markets such as the Berkshires, MA real estate market, which will be among the first to show signs of recovery.

“While the local housing markets in the Berkshires have of course been affected by the current economic conditions, long-term projections remain overwhelmingly positive,” says broker Cindy Welch of Richmond, MA-based Tucker Welch Properties. “Berkshire County homes have long been sought-after and because most of our communities here value the preservation of our rural setting, we haven’t had the explosive real estate development that other regions in the country have had. This means we aren’t burdened by an unreasonable amount of housing stock and the regional market will stabilize more swiftly.”

With mortgage interest rates expected to rise in the coming months and the First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit extended until April 30, 2010, there’s no better time than now to invest in Berkshire homes for sale. The January 2010 forecast from the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) sees the 30-year fixed rate rising to 5.2% (from last quarter’s 4.9%) and to 5.4% by the second quarter of this year.

As such, home buyers who would like to take advantage of the still currently low interest rates as well as the tax credit (whose coverage has also been expanded to include buyers who are current homeowners), would do well to invest in Berkshire, MA homes now before the rates rise higher and the tax credit expires. To view a sampling of currently available Berkshire County homes and for more advice and information on investing in the Berkshires, visit http://www.tuckerwelchproperties.com.

Massachusetts Travel: Discoveries in the Berkshires — North Adams and Williamstown

OnSeptember 28, 2010 I headed off to the town of North Adams to explore another award-winning historic structure: the Porches Inn, a collection of Victorian row houses, former mill workers’ homes, that was lovingly rescued and restored by successful local hospitality entrepreneur Nancy Fitzpatrick. Nancy showed me through the entire property which features 47 uniquely appointed rooms that charm the visitor with their “industrial granny chic ambience”. Sabine, the housecat, welcomed me as well, and as a true architecture lover, I was duly impressed by Nancy’s commitment to historical preservation. Across the street from the Porches is MassMOCA, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the largest center for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the United States. Housed in huge industrial complex that was formerly the Sprague Electric Company, contemporary art installations have found a perfect home here. Starting with 5 upside-down trees in the courtyard, this museum offers a provocative art experience. Under the title of “Material World: Sculpture to Environment”, I found large-scale art installations that were composed of fishing lines, twisted paper and crocheted rope that dominate the expansive spaces of this former factory. Under the title “Gravity is a Force to be Reckoned With”, the “upside-down house” leaves the visitors with more questions than answers. And Sol LeWitt’s collection of 105 colourful oversized geometric wall drawings provides a visual

Gardens in the Berkshires

Article by By Ann T. Claffie

The Berkshires, America’s premier cultural resort, covers Massachusetts’ western region. The region’s fertile lands, sparkling waters and panoramas of thick forests and scenic mountains attract travelers seeking inspiration and rejuvenation. One such visitor was Norman Rockwell who lived here for his last 25 years. Many of the faces in his illustrations were drawn from the community. The largest collection of his work and his studio are housed at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. “Stockbridge Main Street at Christmas” is a celebration of the famous painting that took him 11 years to complete. The Dec. 2-4 event includes a house tour and a recreation of the painting.Chesterwood, the home and studio of Daniel Chester French, is just two miles from the Rockwell Museum. Sculptor Daniel Chester French considered Chesterwood to be the best place to live. He designed and maintained his own gardens and was often seen trimming his bushes and tending to his gardens. His most famous sculpture is the seated Abraham Lincoln, in Washington, DC.

The Berkshire Botanical Garden, Stockbridge, began operating in 1934. Collections are displayed in an informal, country setting. Groups can participate in “hands-on” workshops. In contrast, the Mission House on Main Street, Stockbridge, built in 1739 by Reverend John Sargent, is surrounded by examples of Colonial gardening. One garden features a colonial-style dooryard garden of circular brick paths. A kitchen garden contains 100 plants that had culinary or medicinal value to early colonists.

Another Stockbridge site offers beautiful vistas of the Berkshires. The Shrine of Divine Mercy sits atop “Eden Hill,” once a Gilded Age estate. The Shrine welcomes groups for tours of the chapel and grounds. In Lenox, visitors will see more examples from the Gilded Age. One of the finest examples is The Mount, Edith Wharton’s estate and gardens. Wharton delighted in her gardens. Although she is the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize, she declared, “Decidedly, I’m a better landscape gardener than a novelist.”

Valerie Locher, Horticulturalists, Inc. offers step-on guide service that includes private garden tours and talks, tailored for any would-be gardener. Valerie boasts of over 30 years of experience. The Red Lion Inn on Main Street, Stockbridge, decorates its exterior with abundant baskets of flowers, including their “Courtyard,” where groups can dine “alfresco.” The Crowne Plaza Hotel, Pittsfield, opens its doors to a picturesque fountain surrounded by a garden of flowers. The Comfort Inn & Suites, Great Barrington, the newest hotel in the Berkshires, provides an indoor pool/ spa for weary travelers. It is ideally located for access to local festivals.

Finally, after three days of drizzle, Wednesday September 29, 2010 was forecast to be a sunny and warm day. While sending my husband to do some outlet shopping in Lee, I continued about 10 minutes further west to the historic town of Stockbridge. Another very picturesque town, Stockbridge is known as the home of the Norman Rockwell Museum, and of Chesterwood, a historic mansion that used to be the summer estate and studio of Daniel Chester French, a famous American sculptor. I had planned a visit to the Red Lion Inn, one of the few American inns that has been in continuous use since the 18th century. Carol Bosco Baumann took me on a tour of this historic property which is also owned by the Kilpatrick family who bought this property in 1968 and saved it from demolition. The inn is a huge historic building that dates back to 1897 and features more than 100 guest rooms, each one uniquely appointed with antiques, artwork and china. There are several adjacent guest houses that can be rented as well. Some of the long hallways in the main inn are a little slanted, and together with the historically inspired décor, this adds to the authentic feel of the Red Lion Inn as a Victorian-era property. Carol even told me a few ghost stories about the good-natured spirits that are still said to inhabit some of the rooms at the Red Lion Inn. After snapping some photos on Stockbridge’s picturesque main street I picked up my husband and we drove to another historic hospitality establishment
